Sudden Coffee. Not Your Typical Instant Coffee.

I recently came across Sudden Coffee. Their mission is to change your impression of instant coffee. Sure, when you think of instant coffee, you have powder, and you just need to add water. Sudden Coffee is banking that their brewing method and packaging process will differentiate them from your typical instant coffee powders. The coffee beans are brewed with care and then freeze-dried, which helps preserve the coffee’s delicate flavors while dehydrating it to crystallized form. Traditional coffee is usually dried with heat. The coffee is then packaged in air-tight, compostable tubes. Each tube makes one serving and has a shelf life of at least 6 months. Preparing the coffee is as simple as dissolving one tube of the crystallized coffee in 8-10oz of hot water and customizing as desired.

Sudden Coffee works as a subscription service. You choose the quantity and frequency, and they will ship the coffee to your doorstep. One of the perks of a subscription service – coffee will always be in stock and you’ll always some ready when you want, especially for those busy mornings.

Currently, Sudden Coffee offers light roast and medium roast options. Their coffee beans are carefully sourced and curated. Each coffee comes with a story of where it’s from, how it was brewed, and its flavor profile. They rotate their coffee selection every few months, so you’ll get to discover and try many different coffees over time.

The coffee tubes are packaged in a small pouch and arrive along with a handwritten thank you note (which you can plant!) and postcards with coffee information and brewing tips.

Their featured light roast we received this month was Rayos Del Sol from Peru, roasted by Intelligentsia Coffee. It’s described as having pear, lime, and apricot flavors. Meanwhile, their featured medium roast this month was Cristalina from Colombia, roasted by Equator Coffees. The tasting notes mention flavors of fresh melon, Juicy Fruit gum, and chocolate chip cookies.

Our thoughts: The crystals dissolve very smoothly in hot water and releases a nice aroma as well. It smells and tastes like brewed coffee. Many times I find instant coffee to have a slightly sour and chalky aftertaste. With Sudden Coffee, that sourness was not present. I probably wouldn’t have known it was instant coffee if I wasn’t the one preparing it myself. The tubes are very convenient and portable. It’s great for when you’re on-the-go or traveling. Now you can still have quality, specialty coffee, even when you’re short on time and don’t have to settle for anything less. This is perfect for those mornings when I don’t have time to make coffee and I don’t feel like waiting in line at the coffee shop. I don’t go camping often, but I can see myself bringing this to get my coffee fix away from home. It‘s also great to have handy in my bag, just in case I need a midday pick-me-up.
