There’s a lot of protein powders out there, each with varying sources and formulations, and it can be difficult to choose one that fits your needs, palate, price point. Obviously the best way to get your protein and nutrients is from whole food, but protein supplements can come in very handy for individuals with active lifestyles as well as a post-workout recovery drink. Personally, I have several criteria I look for in protein powders. It has to be dairy-free (due to dairy intolerance), gentle in the digestive system, and made with clean ingredients with no artificial ingredients or preservatives. I live an active lifestyle (with strength training, CrossFit, circus arts) and also look for supplements that would help me with muscle recovery and inflammation.
I learned about Modus Nutrition recently. Their products are NSF International Certified for Sport. What does that mean? It means their products do not contain any substances banned by major athletic organizations. Their products are manufactured at facilities audited by NSF for quality and safety. They are certified with a level of safety and purity that exceeds that of your typical supplement company.
Modus Nutrition was created with the pro athlete in mind, but recognizes that even the amateur athlete, sports enthusiast, fitness professional, and physically active individual can benefit from their products. They recognize that dietary intolerance is quite prevalent these days and may lead to gastrointestinal distress, inflammation in the body, and interfere with the athlete’s performance. They formulate their protein powder to be hypoallergenic, free of dairy, gluten, and nuts. In addition, it is non-GMO and has no added sugars, no artificial colors, flavorings or preservatives. Their protein is plant-based using potato, cranberry seed, and pumpkin seeds to form a strong amino acid profile for optimal athletic performance. There’s 7g of instantized BCAAs for stimulating muscle protein synthesis pathways. There’s 22g of quick absorbing protein for fueling muscle growth post workout, and 8g of slow absorbing protein for preventing catabolism of muscles.
I’ve just started using the Modus products and is really impressed. The protein tastes great and is very satisfying post workout. How I enjoy it? I blend it along with 1/2 a frozen banana, 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, and a bunch of ice cubes. I sprinkle some cayenne pepper on top, because spicy chocolate is a wonderful pairing. Not to mention, cayenne pepper has got some nice benefits as well, like its anti-inflammatory and digestion aiding properties.
In addition to protein, Modus Nutrition also offers two products for fuel and recovery. There’s Power On, a proprietary blend of 15 ingredients working in synergy to improve cognitive performance, calmness, and mental focus, without any stimulants or wired, jittery feelings. I generally avoid pre-workout formulas, because of questionable ingredients, too much caffeine or stimulants, or the potential unpleasing side effects. Sometimes I’d have a cup of coffee as a pre-workout, but coffee is not always easy on the stomach. I take Power On about 30 minutes before my workout. I felt focused during my workout, and it didn’t give me uncomfortable feelings or anything. It was energizing and there was no crash afterwards either. Focus and energy is important, but rest and sleep quality are also important. There’s also Power Off, a proprietary blend of 9 ingredients to promote relaxation, sleep and brain health. I take Power Off about 30 minutes before bedtime and I feel well rested with no groggy feeling the next day.
