For roasting or baking apples, there’s a variety to choose from and often it’s really just a matter of preference whether you prefer something more sweet or tart. Here is a cool comparison of apple used for apple pies if you want to look into it more. Often I find, a combination of Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples is a pretty good choice. Here’s a recipe for roasted apples that can be prepared in a campfire, grill, or in the oven. These Campfire Angry Apples are courtesy of Angry Orchard and uses their hard cider to add an extra kick. There’s crunchiness from granola and goes perfectly with a scoop of ice cream.
Ingredients (serves 4):
- 4 large baking apples
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 crunchy granola bar, broken up
- 1 bottle Angry Orchard Crisp Apple
- Vanilla ice cream (optional)
Directions:
- Slice apples in half and core. Place 2 halves in heavy duty foil, skin side up.
- Sprinkle apple with 2 tbsp brown sugar and 1/4 granola bar.
- Fold up edges of packet, and pour about 3 ounces (1/4 bottle) of Angry Orchard Crisp Apple Cider over.
- Fold up edges and seal packet tight.
- Place over fire or hot grill (or place in oven at 350F)
- Cook until packets begin to hiss and bubble. Remove and set aside until cook enough to touch.
- Open and enjoy. Serve with vanilla ice cream!
