Monday, June 11 was the launch of Gotham Bar and Grill‘s annual Greenmarket to Gotham with “12 Weeks, 12 Farms, 12 Menus.” Each week, the chefs will put together a $25 two-course lunch menu featuring a particular Union Square Greenmarket farm. The first week showcased fresh produce from Cherry Lane Farms of Cumberland County, New Jersey.
I was invited along with others to taste the first menu which offered a new potato and green garlic soup for a starter and a summer squash dish as the main entree. Since I am sensitive to lactose, they happily made a few modifications to the menu to fit my dietary restrictions.
Instead of the soup, they served their Red Watercress Salad which had fresh watercress, baby spinach, toasted hazelnuts and tangelo orange. It was a refreshing salad. The sweet citrus flavors from the orange complemented the watercress taste very well. The Cherry Lane Farms Summer Squash also featured zucchini blossom stuffed with goat cheese, smoked eggplant, panisse and sauce vert. It was delicious and surprisingly very filling. The tomato in the dish was very fresh too.
The meal concluded with dessert of course, a Strawberry Shortcake served with market strawberries, white chocolate ganache and Thai basil ice cream. My modified dessert had strawberry sorbet instead of ice cream and was served without the white chocolate ganache. It’s such a great time for strawberries right now. They were so sweet and fresh.
So that’s the menu for the first week of Greenmarket to Gotham and will be available until Friday, June 15th. Next week, another Greenmarket vendor will be featured along with another delightful menu. Updates on their prix fixe lunch menu can be found on their Facebook page. Enjoy!
