This summer Lipton Teas partnered with NY-based Mulberry Project mixologist Scott Fitzgerald to create refreshing summer cocktails using various Lipton Tea products as a base. LookyTasty.com asks Scott Fitzgerald a few questions about the world of mixology and what he likes to drink this summer.
What does mixology mean to you?
Mixology is the continued improvement and innovation in the cocktail scene. Cocktail bar tending (or mixology) is amazing because it allows true creativity to celebrate the history behind cocktails, and continue to push the cocktail culture further.
How did you get into mixology?
I started in the industry when I was first going through business school. After a few years of a desk job, realized that I was more happy in a fast-paced creative industry that I was behind a desk.
What’s the best part of being a mixologist?
Learning how to tune my recipes to suit each individual person’s palate. I love that everyone has a different idea of what tastes best and I love the challenge of working with each person’s specific taste. I also love meeting people every day. People are much more relaxed and open in a bar environment, so they are happier to reveal the best parts of their personality.
What is your process for creating new cocktails or coming up with drink ideas?
I also start with a classic recipe. It’s important to have all drinks calibrated, and the best way to do that is to rely on the balance of a classic recipe. When I’m looking at matching flavors and ingredients, I look towards culinary pairings and what flavors work with certain liquors. i.e Mexican Cuisine Flavors like cilantro, chili, bell pepper, and Mexican spirits like Tequila and Mezcal
What drew you to get involved with Lipton Teas?
Teas are a very pronounced flavor, and can often transform a cocktail into something truly special. Lipton has, in my opinion, the highest quality teas and even some esoteric blends that are great to experiment with. Additionally, there are very few tea-cocktails on the market right now, so I was intrigued by the challenge of creating some very individual tea cocktails.
What’s your ideal summer cocktail?
The White Citrus Sangria with Lipton Diet Green Tea Citrus has been my savior on a hot summer’s day. After a long day’s work, the cocktail is incredibly easy to make and tastes even better after a day or two in the fridge.
What drink do you order when you go out?
During the day, in the summer, I love a Whiskey and Iced Tea. At night? A Rye Whiskey Sour with Egg White, with a few dashes of my homemade Tea bitters is perfection.
What’s your favorite drink to make?
I love making cocktails with challenging ingredients like Egg White, Homemade Bitters, Homemade Syrups, and of course, Teas.
