Yep, I said chicken and waffle. It does sound like a weird combination, but at the same time, also a bit intriguing. I love chicken and I love waffles. Ever since I learned about this dish, I have been very excited to try it. I wondered about where I would find this mysterious chicken and waffle.
There are actually two dishes that are both referred to as chicken and waffles. One refers to waffles served along with fried chicken. The other refers to a plate of pulled stewed chicken on top of a waffle, covered with gravy. This is of Pennsylvania Dutch influence. They both sound pretty amazing. Any meat that is slow cooked and stewed almost always come out tasty, flavorful, and delicious.
In a recent trip to the Maryland area, I intentionally stumbled upon the Gladys Knight and Ron Winan’s Chicken and Waffles located at 860 Capital Centre Blvd, Largo, MD 20774. I read about it from the Wikipedia page.
I was expecting the place to be a casual diner, but as I approached the restaurant it started to appear fancier and fancier. The restaurant was nicely dimmed and had fancy looking booths and tables scattered around. It was a bit glamoured up than expected. The menu seemed a little overpriced for their food selections. The meal was going to be an adventure nonetheless. Check out their menu here.
For a beverage, I ordered a cup of their “Uptown”. It’s their house blend of lemonade and sweetened ice tea. It was absolutely delectable.
As an appetizer, we ordered the Catfish Basket. It was strips of catfish, covered with a crunchy breading, deep fried, served with tartar sauce.
For the main course, obviously, I was aiming for some dish consisting of a serving of chicken and some waffles. I was a little surprised that there was really only one dish on the menu that paired chicken and waffles. Most of the dishes on the menu were omelets, sandwiches, and that sorts. The Midnight Train consisted of four Southern fried jumbo chicken wings and one original waffle. It sounded like way too much food for me, so I decided to mix and match on my own.
