Svelte adj. graceful and slender

Recently CalNaturale Svelte contacted me with an offer to try out their Svelte all-natural protein beverages and speak with their marketing manager to learn more about the product and hear about what sets them about from other meal replacement and protein shakes out there. I took a quick glimpse through the website and subsequently agreed to a quick Skype meet and greet and to sample their beverages. I think it was the fact that it was an organic, dairy-free, soy milk based beverage that caught my attention.

The people from CalNaturale kindly shipped me samples of their Svelte sustained energy protein drink. There is chocolate, french vanilla, cappuccino, and spiced chai. The drinks come in 15.9 oz cartons with a screw on top. Each serving is 260 calories with 16g protein and 8g of dietary fiber. Each flavor has a cute speech bubble with a unique phrase. “looking good”I decided to chill them in the fridge for now and grab one to enjoy later during the Skype chat. Due to my recent dietary restrictions, I saved the french vanilla flavor for myself and shared the other samples with family and friends.

The interview with the marketing manager was fun and very informative. I was not familiar with California Natural Products (the parent company of CalNaturale Svelte) and was surprised to learn that they have actually been around for 30 years now. The marketing manager informed me that they are a third-generation family business located in Northern California since the 80’s. They created and patented many of the original organic rice syrup formulas and rice ingredients that are found in many of the organic and natural products sold in supermarkets. These products include rice milk beverages, soy milks, hemp milk, chai teas, organic soups, broths, and other nutritional beverages. These products are created for their contract customers and are marketed under the customer’s brand and that’s why I never hear of California Natural Products.

So I asked, what sets CalNaturale Svelte apart from other meal replacements and protein drinks? I’m not a big meal replacement or protein beverage drinker, but I do love soy based beverages and milk shakes. The marketing manager placed a strong emphasis on the nutritional benefits of the beverage. CalNaturale Svelte is a all-natural, gluten-free, vegan protein shake that is like a combination of an energy drink and protein drink without the crazy ingredients. Each bottle contains 16g of organic protein from fresh organic soy milk, along with organic complex carbohydrates for sustained energy. It is sweetened with natural organic sugars and stevia, only 9g of sugar per bottle. It’s also a good source of fiber. The goal is to provide lasting nutrition and energy for those busy days. It makes a satisfying quick and healthy snack when on the run. It is also great for a pre or post workout beverage.

There’s one ingredient that I wasn’t very familiar with: Inulin, item number 4 on the ingredient list. The marketing manager told me a little bit about this inulin ingredient. Inulin is a special fiber found naturally in foods like artichokes, asparagus, onions, bananas, and others. Actually, it is increasingly being used by many food manufacturers and showing up in many package foods and products in the supermarket. It’s nutritional benefits include promoting good digestion as a prebiotic and aiding the absorption of calcium and magnesium in the body. More about inulin can be found on their website.

I sampled the french vanilla flavor and it tasted pretty good. It was very creamy and rich. I think it might be a bit too rich, but it was a very satisfying beverage snack. I found the drink to be a little on the sweeter side, but not too overpowering. That is probably because I am too used to drinking unsweetened soy milk. There was a moderately noticeable aftertaste from the stevia, but other than that the french vanilla flavor was not bad. The 15.9oz bottle is definitely too much for one serving but good thing there’s a handy twist off top. In my opinion, each bottle is probably good for 2 to 3 servings. The cappucino flavor looks very appealing. The spiced chai flavor sounds like it would make a tasty warm beverage. I’m also curious about how they could be used in the kitchen. I was thinking about maybe protein pancakes with the chocolate flavor.

I enjoyed the protein drink. I think it would be something I’d have around for those busy times when I just want a quick, nice and filling beverage or when I’m just craving for a sweet and satisfying snack. I really like the fact that it’s resealable and that I can just toss it in the fridge and finish it later. CalNaturale Svelte can be found in various health food stores and supermarkets or purchased online here.

This sounds like a very good drink. You don’t hear many people talking about inulin and it’s good to see that it’s in this drink. My favorite post workout snack is peanut butter toast and veggies. Strange combo, I know, but I love it!

This is really cool. I am more of a protein drink guy after a work out, so I usually will get the protein shake that Naked offers or drink Muscle Milk. Both are pretty expensive. How affordable are these CalNaturale drinks? I would love to try them and see how well they serve as a snack, I have never been too much into replacing a meal with a filling drink. I like smoothies and protein shakes, but nothing really satisfies your hunger like chewing on something. What are your thoughts?

These sell for about $2.99 each at the store.
They are available in a 12-pack for $35.99 on their website, but I found it cheaper on Amazon, $29.81 for the 12-pack.
After a workout, I’m usually super thirsty, so I like to go for a smoothie, apple sauce, yogurt, or a bowl of cereal.
I do have to agree. When I’m hungry, sometimes I like to have something to munch on. Some of my favorite snacks – fresh fruit, peanut butter on toast, nuts, and when I have time… homemade granola bars.
