It’s National Donut Day and while popular chains are offering free donuts and launching new menu items, none of them are vegan. Therefore, here’s a list of local bakeries in New York City that whips up some of the sweetest and meanest donuts, pastries, and baked goods that are vegan-friendly.

BabyCakes of the Lower East Side offers a variety of baked goods most of which are gluten-free, but all vegan, wheat-free and soy-free. They use spelt flour in their baked goods, and for their gluten-free ones, they use rice flour, garbanzo/fava bean mix, or oat flours. They use rice and coconut milk as their dairy alternative. Donut flavors rotate daily, always fresh out of the oven. They are located at 248 Broome Street, between Orchard and Ludlow.
DunWell Doughnuts is known as New York City’s first all-vegan doughnut shop. Located in Brooklyn, they bake their organic artisan doughnuts fresh twice daily. They have over 200 flavors. The selections vary everyday, but there’s always the staple ones like traditional glazed, cinnamon sugar, chocolate, and jelly-filled, and they are always working on more. Find them at 222 Montrose Ave in Brooklyn.
Vegan Divas also bake with all fresh, natural, organic ingredients. Their products are vegan, kosher, wheat-free, and high in fiber and low in cholesterol. They bake with organic spelt flour, maple syrup, canola and cold pressed coconut oil. Their store is located at 1437 1st Avenue between 75th and 74th Street, but you can also find their goods at various food stores across the city.
