The Village Voice’s sixth annual Choice Eats took place this past Tuesday evening at the 69th Armory. Over 50 restaurants, handpicked by Village Voice food critics Robert Sietsema and Tejal Rao, gathered together and shared some of their signature foods and drink to attendees. In addition, there were complimentary craft beer pairings, wine and liquor beverages, and bottles of Smart Water. There was so much food to choose from, but here’s a few of the items I really enjoyed.
Downstairs at the VIP lounge, I came across Thirty Acres and their Red Wine Marinated Egg. This dish features a soft boiled egg marinated in red wine, served with mustard seeds, trout roe, shallots, mache, and rye crouton. Thirty Acres is located at 500 Jersey Ave in Jersey City, NJ.
Back upstairs in the main room, Juliette of Williamsburg served their Local Dayboat Fluke Ceviche with smokey tomato, ginger, radishes and black pepper dressing. Juliette is located in Brooklyn, at 135 N 5th St.
Red Hook Lobster Pound offered their Sweet Maine Shrimp Rolls, which are always delightful. Sweet Maine shrimp tossed in a roasted garlic & tarragon mayo and served on a split-top bun. Nice alternative to their delicious lobster roll. You can find them at 284 Van Brunt Street in Brooklyn or around the city in their truck.
La Slowteria of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn served up some innovative regional Mexican food. Here is El Mano (scallops aguachile, onion, cilantro, cucumber, and corn tostadas). La Slowteria is located at 548 Court St. near W 9th St in Brooklyn.
For desserts, the S’more Bakery caught my attention with their cooking touch. Here’s their signature S’morgasm. Take a vanilla bean marshmallow and sandwich it between two cinnamon sugar & clove honey grahams crackers, spread with a layer of semisweet chocolate ganache. The marshmallow is torched right before the top graham cracker is assembled, resulting in a nice, warm and gooey marshmallow sandwich. Find them online or around the city at market locations.
