Birds Eye Voila! Brings You Veggie-Powered Meals

on

Just the other day, I posted about the Birds Eye Steamfresh Chef’s Favorites products that I sampled as a Foodbuzz Tastemaker. Well, Birds Eye had also partnered with the Foodbuzz Tastemaker program to share samples of their Voila! products as well. I received a coupon in the mail redeemable for any of their Birds Eye Voila! frozen meals.

Birds Eye Voila! is a line of veggie-powered frozen meals filled with Birds Eye vegetables and quality meats, featuring a variety of flavors. There’s a nice selection of dishes and each meal can be prepared in as little as 10 minutes. There’s chicken, beef, and shrimp dishes available – from chicken florentine to shrimp scampi to beef lo mein. Each meal is incorporates selected vegetable ingredients, but there’s no vegetarian options available.

At the supermarket, I found only about a handful of flavors in the freezer section, even though there’s about 17 different ones listed on the website. Anyway, I decided to bring home a bag of the Garlic Shrimp.

The Garlic Shrimp dish contains rotini pasta (that’s the twisty type) along with chopped broccoli, carrots, corn, and shrimp prepared in a dairy-based garlic sauce. Each bag yields about 3.5 cups once it’s cooked. Each 1 cup serving contains 230 calories with 9 grams of fat and 10 grams of protein.

The product can be prepared over the stove (preferred) or with the microwave, but both are equally as simple and takes just about the same amount of time. I decided to go with the stove top method. I poured the contents into my cast iron skillet and added about 1/3 cup of water. I let it cook over medium high heat until the shrimp looked cooked and the ingredients where heated through. I made sure to stir occasionally, since I noticed that the sauce was evaporating quite quickly. I didn’t want the pasta to get too dry or burn.

It was definitely very easy to prepare and quick. It had a nice simple, garlic flavor to it that was not too overpowering. There’s still a lot of dairy in the product though. I’m guessing its the butter and cream that makes it tasty. As for having it in a meal, I think I would prefer to add additional ingredients to enhance the dish, as opposed to enjoying it as is. There was a lot of pasta, a decent amount of shrimp, and a colorful mix of vegetables, but I would add an extra side of my favorite vegetables to accompany this dish. Either that or I would throw in some extra mixed vegetables while preparing it on the stove. Anyway, it’s definitely a nice convenience food, with reasonable calorie content, and tastes good too. However, I’d like it if they also offered non-dairy based meals or vegetarian options as well.

Are you curious to try Birds Eye Viola! for yourself? Well, I also received stacks and stacks of Buy One Get One Free coupons for any Birds Eye Voila! Regular size products (up to $5.49 value), as well as coupons for their selected Family size bags (up to $8.50 value) too. These BOGO coupons are good until the end of the year (expires 12/31/11).

If you’d like some, leave a comment below or email me, and we can arrange to have some coupons mailed to you, while supplies last.
