Chicago: Half Price Maki Sushi at Tank Sushi

on

I returned to Tank Sushi last Friday to enjoy their half-price maki sushi. I’ve been there a few times before in my previous visits to Chicago and enjoyed it every time. The half-price select maki rolls are available during weekday lunch hours. Even though it’s from a shorten pre-determined list, the maki rolls to choose from are definitely not lacking. It include a handful of chef’s specialty rolls in addition to the traditional maki rolls. Quality sushi rolls that’s tasty and inexpensive, how wonderful!

Tank Sushi offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Since it was a pleasant sunny day, we sat on the sidewalk tables giving us the opportunity to also do some people-watching, traffic-watching, and sun tanning. Between the two of us, we selected four items from their Signature Maki rolls, one of which was recommended by our friendly server.

The Crazy Eel featured avocado, sesame seeds topped with eel in a sweet soy sauce topped with crushed peanuts. It normally includes cream cheese as well, but we asked for it to be excluded.

The Mi Maki was filled with spicy crab meat with masago, topped with ama-ebi, mango salsa, and cilantro.

The Samurai roll contained pieces of tuna, yellow tail, apple and spring mix lettuce topped with spicy mayo topped and masago.

The Latin Heat, which was recommended by our server, had smoked salmon, escolar, jalapeno, avocado, and cilantro, topped with chili mayo and sesame seeds.

The Crazy Eel roll takes the traditional unagi maki (eel roll) to the next level. It’s a slight variation from the Dragon roll (typically tempura shrimp, eel, avocado), but also has that nice and thick, sweet kabayaki (eel sauce) soy-based sauce. I’d imagine it would have been crazier with the addition of the cream cheese, but I was watching my lactose intake.

The combination of the spicy crab meat and the mango salsa in the Mi Maki was delightful. Love mango! Since sushi tend to be high carb, the Samurai roll helped sneak in some of those leafy greens and with the spicy mayo it was fantastic. We were really happy with the recommendation we got from our server. The Latin Heat was delicious and light, with a nice spicy kick to it.

Lunch was wonderful. We filled our stomachs with delicious sushi and our wallets did not have to take a major dent at all. The service was great as well.
