‘Forks Over Knives’ Documentary Premieres May 6

Forks Over Knives premieres today, May 6 in New York (and Los Angeles) and will be opening in select theaters this month throughout the U.S.

Forks Over Knives “examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the so-called “diseases of affluence” that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods.” This documentary stars The China Study author T. Colin Campbell, PhD and physician Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., MD, as they research the issue of diet and disease in a way that has and will continue to stir many debates.

Keep in mind as much as this is a “documentary,” it’s clearly around to promote a vegetarian/vegan diet by rejecting animal-based foods. Regardless, I’m very interested in watching this film and could be something for those considering such diet.

Personally, I’m not a vegetarian or anything. I enjoy all food. However, as much as I enjoy meat, I maintain a low meat diet, and tend consume fish and tofu for the most part. With my recent struggles with digestion issues and developing food sensitivities, I’ve gained much interest in exploring various diets and health lifestyles. I’m about half way through The China Study and although I have my skepticism on the validity of his analysis, it’s been an interesting read so far. I do agree that diet and lifestyle are important factors for promoting good health, but whether there’s a single solution for all… I doubt it.

Opening weekend:
The New York Coalition for Healthy School Food is hosting two special screenings during the opening weekend of Forks Over Knives. After each of the 7:45pm screenings on Fri May 6th and Sat May 7th, there will be a Q&A and discussion with a panel of health and nutrition experts and authors. Invited panel participants include Alexandra Jamieson, Victoria Moran, Fran Costigan, and Nava Atlas.
(I remember seeing Fran Costigan at the NYC Vegetarian Food Festival where she presented a cooking demo and talked about developing vegan dessert recipes.)

I’ve already purchased my ticket and I look forward to the screening tonight at the Sunshine Cinema. It will be very interesting!
