Adventures in Toronto: Eggspectations

We thought Sunset Grill was pretty neat, but just had to check out the other breakfast restaurant the lady at the hotel suggested. Eggspectations was located on 220 Yonge St. This place had really nice decor. It’s definitely on the fancier scale of diners. The restaurant was dimly lit and had a nice atmosphere. I thought it was kind of cute that their door knobs were shaped like eggs.

This is the cover of their menu. I really like their logo. It’s adorable!

Their menu was quite impressive. They had the regular items, like eggs, meat, bagels, etc. and they had pages of their signature dishes, with fun names often starting with the prefix “Egg-”. The restaurant also had a bar. Sweet! They listed some of their special alcoholic coffee beverages. We thought it would be quite nice to enjoy a White Russian (or something similar) along with our breakfast.

We ordered two of the Eggspectation signature dishes. Here’s what we had for breakfast:
Eggstreme
Smoked salmon, grilled tomatoes and two eggs (any style), with capers, onions and toasted bagel.

Eggwhat?
Corned beef hash, two eggs (any style), grilled potatoes, served with toast and chef’s fruit garnish.

Coffee and alcohol for breakfast

Breakfast was awesome, especially when served with coffee liquor! The restaurant were a bit pricey for breakfast, but the service was great and the food was worth its value. The portions were plentiful. The corned beef hash was not too salty. The breakfast was not too oily or greasy. I really liked their side of grilled potatoes. I packed away some leftover potatoes and toasts. Their signature dishes were about $10+ CAD. The alcoholic beverages were about $6-7 CAD each. We were on quite rampage that morning; having a big breakfast and alcoholic drinks with breakfast. Nonetheless, it was fun to treat ourselves to a fancy breakfast in an awesome foreign city.

We were quite stuffed, but we did save a little room for just a slice of french toast. Yay, french toast!

Adventures in Toronto: Sunset Grill

We were craving for some good breakfast foods, like eggs, ham, toasts, omelettes, and that good stuff. We went to the hotel information desk and asked for some recommendations for local diner places. The lady at the desk picked up an area map and drew some circles. She gave the names of two diner/breakfast restaurants. She referred to Sunset Grill as a regular casual diner and the Eggspectations as a more upscale diner. They were both about two blocks away. We thanked her for her help and walked away staring at the map, trying to decide which of the two places to check out.

We decided to hit up Sunset Grill located on 1 Richmond St. West (at Yonge and Richmond). We were a little intimidated by the idea of going to an upscale diner for breakfast. We were simply craving breakfast foods, but nothing too fancy, and so, a regular diner would hit the spot.

After we were seated, we quickly looked through the menu and placed our orders. I decided to go for their fluffy pancakes and a side of eggs, and my buddy ordered a ham, bacon, and cheese omelette. While we waited for our food, we looked around the restaurant. For a regular, casual diner, this place looked pretty neat. It wasn’t super fancy, but it had nice lighting and simple interior.

Here was our breakfast:
Fluffy pancakes

Side of eggs (they come in threes)

Ham, bacon, and cheese omelette with a side of potatoes

Some toast

The breakfast was good and filling. This place was definitely a great choice for breakfast. The service was great. The waitstaff was friendly. I remember our waiter having a very very deep voice. The prices were reasonable and portions were good. The pancakes were really fat and fluffy indeed, and I was stuffed after about 3 pieces. They were so good, I didn’t want to waste it and packed it up in a takeout box. It would make a great snack for later the day. We had a good breakfast experience here, but we were quite curious about this more upscale diner that the lady at the hotel mentioned. We decided to check out Eggspectations on the following day.

Adventures in Toronto: Sushi Island

One late evening, we ventured over to the Little Italy area of Toronto. We were in the mood for sushi and was looking for Sushi Island, located at 571 College St. It was pretty late in the evening and they had stopped offering their All you can eat special (which starts from about $14). Therefore, we were only able to order from their regular menu. Here are some highlights.

I think this was a pity salad. This is probably the tiniest salad I’ve ever seen.

Downtown roll (Eel, tobiko, cucumber, and cream cheese)

Brown rice sushi (Brown rice with seaweed bits and black sesame seeds)

Sushi Island was a pretty good place. The sushi was alright. They were probably close to closing their kitchen when we arrived. That explains the pity salads they offered us, since we were not expecting complimentary salads with our sushi plates. Brown rice sushi is always a neat thing to try. The atmosphere was kind of nice as well. They had these folding panel doors, which gave an outdoor dining atmosphere. Also, we were quite entertained by the drunkards leaving the nearby bars and screaming on the streets. The dining experience probably would have been better during late afternoon/dinner hours. I am very curious about their All you can eat menu though.
