Bruschetta

on

Bruschetta comes from the Italian “bruscare” meaning “to roast over coals.” Bruschetta consists of grilled bread, rubbed with fresh garlic and drizzled with extra virgin olive oil. Traditionally, the bread was baked in a brick wood fired oven until it was crispy and golden brown. At home, you can just use at grill, oven, or broiler.

The word bruschetta actually refers to how the bread is grilled and not the toppings. At the same time, you will find that the word bruschetta is frequently used to refer to the toppings instead. Popular toppings involve tomatoes, basil leaves, and mozzarella cheese. Other variations include toppings such as red peppers, beans, vegetables, and meat. Bruschetta is usually served as a snack or appetizer.

Well, here are directions on how to prepare the bread. It is similar to making garlic bread, but not quite the same.

Ingredients:

  • Slices of Italian or French bread
  • 1 garlic, cut in 1/2 crosswise
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • salt and pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven on broiler setting.
  2. Place the slices of bread in the oven and broil until golden bread on both sides. (About a minute or two on each side)
  3. Move the bread to a plate. Lightly rub the garlic on each slice of bread.
  4. Brush each slice with the olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  5. Serve warm. Add toppings, if desired.
